Kentucky woman charged with leaving elderly man in hot car

A 37-year-old Kentucky woman faces multiple charges after allegedly stranding a 91-year-old man inside his disabled vehicle during extreme heat because he refused to buy her cigarettes.

Nikki Reed Hoskins was arrested last week in Laurel County and charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, theft by unlawful taking, third-degree assault on a police officer, and menacing.

Deputies responded to a 911 call and found the victim still inside the vehicle on the roadway. The heat index reached 101 degrees at the time, according to the Laurel County Sheriff's Office. Hoskins had allegedly removed the keys after an argument and walked toward her home on Littontown Road.

Officers later entered the residence after Hoskins refused to surrender and had outstanding warrants. She allegedly struck Deputy Cyruss McVey during the arrest and showed signs of intoxication. Hoskins was booked into the Laurel County Correctional Center on a $10,000 cash-only bond.

She was scheduled to appear in court on Monday, July 6.
