Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has publicly criticized Real Madrid's approach to managing coach Xabi Alonso, suggesting the club leaves him isolated during tough times. Alonso, who guided Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season, is facing scrutiny at the Santiago Bernabeu after a recent win at Alaves marked just their third victory in nine games across all competitions. This has left Real Madrid four points behind rivals Barcelona in the standings, compounded by a reported conflict with star winger Vinicius Jr.
In an interview with Sky Germany, Carro emphasized a contrasting environment at Leverkusen. "We don’t advise anyone. At the time we would have liked him to have stayed here, but we know that he is a coach with enormous talent who, yes, has a different context in Madrid," Carro said. He pointed to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez's view of coaches as a "necessary evil," noting that in Madrid, the coach often bears criticism alone. "The situation is very different from the one he lived in Leverkusen, where we all row in the same direction and do not leave the coach alone politically," he added.
Carro also reflected on the strong bonds formed during Alonso's three years at Leverkusen, mentioning recent visits from Alonso's coaching staff and families during an international break. "We feel a lot of appreciation for each other and we maintain very close contact," he said.
The invitation extends beyond Alonso to former Leverkusen forward Florian Wirtz, who has struggled since moving to Liverpool in the summer. "The door is open," Carro stated. "If the two want to come back, they can do it at any time."
