Liverpool ended their four-match losing streak with a dominant 5-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League at Deutsche Bank Park. Hugo Ekitike scored against his former club to spark the turnaround after Rasmus Kristensen's early opener. Goals from Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai sealed a convincing win, moving Liverpool into the top 10 of the standings.
Liverpool bounced back emphatically in the Champions League, thrashing Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 to halt a run of four defeats across all competitions. The match at Deutsche Bank Park saw the visitors trail early but dominate after the break, climbing from 17th to 10th in the 36-team league phase.
Eintracht took the lead in the 26th minute when Rasmus Kristensen's shot deflected off the post and into the net following a counter-attack initiated by dispossessing Florian Wirtz high up the pitch. Liverpool responded quickly, equalizing in the 33rd minute through Hugo Ekitike, who broke clear on the counter against his former club—where he played before a £79 million move in July—and slotted past Michael Zetterer without celebrating.
The Reds then capitalized on set pieces before halftime. In the 38th minute, Van Dijk headed home Gakpo's corner delivery from close range. Six minutes later, Konate rose unmarked to nod in another Szoboszlai corner, making it 3-1 at the interval. Konate has now scored four of his six Liverpool goals in the Champions League.
The second half belonged to Liverpool. Gakpo extended the lead to 4-1 in the 65th minute, finishing a cutback from Wirtz, who provided two assists in four minutes—his first goal contributions in 10 games for the club. Szoboszlai added a fifth in the 72nd minute, firing low into the bottom right after a layoff from Wirtz.
Substitutions included Alexander Isak exiting at halftime with a groin issue, replaced by Federico Chiesa, and Mohamed Salah coming on in the 75th minute but missing chances. Ekitike, starting alongside Isak for the first time, impressed in a front-two setup.
Arne Slot praised the performance: “We needed to win… the players get their reward… it’s easier to control a game when you are 3-1 up.” Ekitike reflected: “My first goal in the Champions League… I am really happy… I have so much respect for [Eintracht].” Van Dijk added: “It’s a win… something to build on… ignore the outside noise.”
This marks the third consecutive Champions League game involving Eintracht ending 5-1.
