Machakos County warns of demolishing riparian land structures

Machakos County has announced demolitions of houses and perimeter walls on riparian land to restore waterways and reduce flooding risks. Areas in Mavoko including 360 Estate, Kicheko, and Kincar will be targeted first. Mavoko Municipal Manager Josylyn Kauta said an agreement has been reached with one developer to begin work immediately.

Machakos County government announced a fresh wave of demolitions targeting structures on riparian land, particularly in Mavoko and surrounding estates. Perimeter walls and houses built during the dry season have blocked waterways, causing flooding during recent rains.

Mavoko Municipal Manager Josylyn Kauta, speaking for the county, stated, “As the county government of Machakos, we have agreed with the developer to start work immediately so that we can create waterways.” She added, “We have moved in and given notices of demolition” to developers who encroached downstream.

Enforcement will start from the B-Energy petrol station through Kicheko and Silanga. Affected property owners must remove structures before county action.

Kauta warned, “This serves as a notice to all developers to start moving before we pull down their structures.” Recent flooding has hit Nairobi and Machakos hard, with water entering homes and damaging roads in flood-prone areas like 360 Estate, Kicheko, and Kincar.
