Magical Girl Witch Trials developer prepares for North American expansion

Following the success of Magical Girl Witch Trials, which has sold over 200,000 copies on Steam, developer Re,AER is establishing Acacia Games to expand the title internationally. The gothic mystery visual novel, praised for its Overwhelmingly Positive reviews, is set for a Nintendo Switch release in Spring 2026. In a recent Famitsu interview, representative Toshiyuki Hata discussed plans to bring the game to North American audiences.

Game Overview

Magical Girl Witch Trials is a gothic mystery visual novel that features 13 girls competing in cruel witch trials. Drawing comparisons to Puella Magi ☆ Madoka Magica and Danganronpa, it blends dark magical girl storytelling with intense gameplay elements. The game launched on PC via Steam in July 2025 and currently supports Japanese and Simplified Chinese languages.

Sales and Reception

By October 2025, the title had sold over 200,000 copies on Steam, accumulating more than 15,000 reviews with an Overwhelmingly Positive rating. This rapid success surprised the team, as Toshiyuki Hata noted in a Famitsu interview: “We’re really astounded by such an unexpected turn of events. Witnessing our game making such a huge leap in growth in such a short time is really eye-opening.”

Company Formation and Expansion Plans

Last month, Re,AER announced the creation of Acacia Games in partnership with developer HYDE, based on Re,AER’s Acacia creative brand. The new company aims to develop and promote original titles globally. Hata explained the motivations: “Since we’re making preparations for the upcoming Switch release and North American expansion, we wanted to consolidate a team that would be able to live up to these expectations, and the establishment of Acacia Games is one part of that plan.”

While specifics remain limited, the North American push likely includes an English-language release, driven by the game's growing English-speaking fanbase. Hata emphasized ambition: “Of course, our goal is to become the number one, both in Japan and the whole world – and we’re prepared to go the distance.” The Nintendo Switch version is slated for Spring 2026.
