The MK party announced the creation of an institute to oversee its operations but retracted the statement two days later. Former president Jacob Zuma was present at the initial briefing. The episode highlights ongoing internal disarray within the party.
On Saturday the MK party held a press conference where it stated that an 18-month assessment had led to the formation of the MK Party’s Institute. The institute would be led by John Hlophe and would direct party affairs, with other structures placed below it.
Two days later on Monday evening the party’s National Officials issued a statement declaring that the earlier announcement did not reflect the views of the national leadership. It added that Zuma and other officials had not been fully aware of the details concerning leadership changes before the statement was released.
The retraction follows a pattern of personnel shifts inside the party. Spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela has been suspended and replaced by Sifiso Mahlangu. The party has also altered its chief whip in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature at least nine times since June 2024.
