Interest in birdwatching among young people in Sweden is rising. The number of young members in BirdLife Sverige has increased every year since 2020.
Figures from BirdLife Sverige show that the number of young people becoming new members is increasing. In 2020 there were 149 and by 2026 the figure had risen to 411 registered, although not all have paid the fee.
Maya Eriksson, 17 and a member of BirdLife Sverige’s youth committee, says the camps fill up immediately. She also leads ringing courses in the Skåne Ornithological Association.
Twelve-year-old Albert describes an excursion outside Helsingborg where the group saw Mandarin Duck and Kingfisher. He calls ringing supercool because it lets you get close to the birds.
Secretary General Stina Rigbäck notes that more youth groups are forming, including at Linné University.
