Morelos collectives organize urban art festival in Cuernavaca

For the first time, the International Urban Art Festival “Graffiti Session Vol.1” will bring together 40 artists in Cuernavaca to highlight graffiti collectives' work. Organized by artist Néstor Guadarrama, known as Yeer, and the GxP crew, the event is set for November 22 and 23 in the Patios de la Estación neighborhood. It aims to revitalize public spaces through artistic interventions and hip hop-inspired cultural activities.

Cuernavaca is set to transform its walls with the first International Urban Art Festival “Graffiti Session Vol.1”, organized by Morelos graffiti collectives. The event, led by urban artist and tattooist Néstor Guadarrama, alias Yeer, and the GxP crew, will take place on November 22 and 23 in the Patios de la Estación neighborhood, a historic area in the Morelos capital.

A total of 40 artists will participate, including those from Morelos, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Guerrero, and Morelia, as well as international guests from El Salvador, Argentina, and Colombia. The goal is to highlight the sustainable work of these collectives, revive core hip hop values, and promote youth talent through aerosol art.

Yeer described the project's beginnings: “We started this project with the idea of taking over public space in my Patios de la Estación neighborhood, a place that was a dump, then a skate park, and now an abandoned police module. Year after year, with our own resources, we invite friends, even South American artists to paint; now we've decided to hold an event that rescues the essence of hip hop to give visibility to our public space because the neighborhood faces violence issues and we want to show another face”.

The initiative emphasizes creative independence and blends styles with large-format pieces, music, dance, film, and other urban expressions. Notable participants include the BRS crew, pioneers of old school graffiti in Mexico; Samuel Mesinas, an international project curator; women with backgrounds in aerosol and tattooing; the international TNT; and locals like GxP, Snoke, Juez, and Poe.

The program features MC’s, break dance battles, DJ sets, a skateboarding area, film and documentary screenings, discussions, and spaces for exhibiting and selling cultural products like clothing, tattoos, and aerosol cans. All activities will occur in the multi-use court and main esplanade, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with free entry for the whole family.

The festival has support from the Patios de La Estación Council, the Morelos Secretariat of Culture, Cuernavaca City Hall, HÁBITAT Morelos, and the “La Estación” Community Cultural Center, though curation and logistics are handled independently.
