Netflix reports sharp viewership drops for returning shows

Netflix is facing significant declines in audience numbers for many of its series when they return for second seasons. Recent data shows drops ranging from 30 to 70 percent across several popular titles. The streaming service is examining possible causes including long production gaps.

Comedies appear particularly affected. Beef lost 70 percent of its viewers after a three-year break. Running Point and The Four Seasons each saw 50 percent drops following one-year gaps.

Live-action adaptations also struggled. One Piece experienced a 30 percent decline after three years but was renewed for a third season. Avatar: The Last Airbender lost 60 percent of its audience for its 2026 second season.

The Night Agent dropped 50 percent between its first and second seasons, which were two years apart, and another 35 percent for its third season after a one-year interval.

Analysts point to extended waits between seasons and competition from platforms like YouTube. A Digital i report noted that viewers spent more time on YouTube than Netflix in 2025.
