Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar has agreed to a one-year contract extension. The 34-year-old centre-back was due to leave at the end of the month after joining from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018.
Schar suffered an ankle injury during a 4-3 win over Leeds United on January 7. A subsequent foot infection ended his 2025-26 season early. He has scored 22 goals in 251 appearances for the club. Schar said he is proud to call Newcastle home and believes there is still much more to come from him. Head coach Eddie Howe described Schar as a highly valued member of the squad for his ability, leadership and experience. Sporting director Ross Wilson noted the extension follows midfielder Lewis Miley's new six-year deal.
