North Carolina mother faces murder charges in son's death

A 52-year-old woman in Fuquay-Varina has been indicted on charges of second-degree murder and child abuse in the 2025 death of her 12-year-old son, who had diabetes.

Holly Wren was arrested Thursday after a Wake County grand jury indicted her on Tuesday. Authorities allege she willfully failed to seek medical care for her son's untreated diabetes, which led to his death on March 24, 2025.

The indictment describes her actions as grossly negligent omissions showing reckless disregard for the boy's life. Wren is being held without bond at the Wake County Jail.

Jacob Wren's obituary portrayed him as a bright child who enjoyed games, hikes, aquariums and time with family and pets. If convicted, Wren faces up to life in prison.
