Nuevo León in top ten for cargo theft in Q3 2025

Nuevo León ranks among Mexico's top ten states for cargo theft in the third quarter of 2025, per an Overhaul analysis. Eighty-seven percent of incidents occurred in those areas, centered in the central and Bajío regions. Violence marked 82 percent of reported cases.

Cargo theft remains a significant hurdle for Mexico's supply chains. Luis Villatoro, Overhaul's director of intelligence for Latin America, reported that in Q3 2025, 87 percent of national incidents occurred in ten states, including Nuevo León. The central and southeastern regions accounted for 79.3 percent of cases, with 80 percent overall split as 48 percent in the central area and 32 percent in the Bajío.

Villatoro noted Puebla topped the list with 23 percent of thefts in those ten states, followed by Mexico State at 18 percent, totaling 41 percent combined. Relative to Q3 2024, Puebla dropped four percentage points and Mexico State one. Meanwhile, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, Michoacán, Veracruz, and Nuevo León saw rises: Michoacán up four points, Veracruz three, and the others one each.

The National Public Security System data shows 82 percent of transporter robberies involved violence. Most, 86 percent, happened Monday through Friday, peaking at 72 percent from Tuesday to Friday. Night hours posed the greatest risk, comprising 52 percent of incidents between 18:00 and 06:00: 30 percent from 18:00 to 24:00 and 22 percent from 00:00 to 06:00. Villatoro cautioned: “Given these timings, traveling at night becomes a dangerous activity”.

The most stolen goods were food and beverages (25 percent), auto parts (12 percent), and miscellaneous items (10 percent). This pattern highlights the urgency for enhanced security on key routes.
