Ogun hosts basketball festival as Abiodun seeks collaboration for sports development

Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has urged private individuals and organizations to partner with the government in developing sports for youth opportunities. He made the call while opening the Bosun Tijani Foundation Festive Basketball Tournament in Abeokuta. The event draws teams from several states and highlights growing sports momentum in the region.

Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun called for collaboration between the state government and private entities to advance sports development and youth opportunities. Speaking at the Alake Sports Centre in Ijeja, Abeokuta, on December 19, 2025, Abiodun declared open the Bosun Tijani Foundation Festive Basketball Tournament. The competition features teams from Lagos, Katsina, Ogun, Osun, the Federal Capital Territory, and other areas.

Represented by his deputy, Mrs. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, the governor emphasized the need to maintain the surge in sports activities following the state's successful hosting of the National Sports Festival earlier in the year. He praised Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, for leveraging sports to empower young people.

"We are particularly excited about the new spirit of sportsmanship and collaboration this festival embodies," Abiodun said. "I urge individuals, associations, foundations and corporate entities to seize this opportunity to partner with the Ogun State Government in our collective effort to further develop sports within our state and across Nigeria."

The deputy added, "You will agree with me that since the last National Sports Festival, Ogun State has experienced a surge in sports programmes and competitions. This is a testament to the unwavering support of our governor, His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, and we are immensely grateful for his commitment to sports development."

Dr. Tijani, whose foundation organized the tournament, described it as an initiative to promote youth engagement and talent through sports. "When young people are supported in environments like this, they reveal their potential not only as athletes but as leaders and contributors to society," he stated. The minister noted that the event fosters inclusion, creativity, and positive engagement during the festive season, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration's investments in youth.

The tournament continues with matches aimed at enhancing sportsmanship, youth development, and community cohesion.
