Sweden's littering fine has existed for 15 years but the risk of receiving a fine remains low. Last year only nine fines were issued in Dalarna.
A total of 416 littering fines were issued across the country during 2025 according to figures from the Police Authority. In Dalarna the fines came from Borlänge with three, Rättvik with three, Mora with two and Älvdalen with one.
Many municipalities issued no fines at all, including Luleå, Motala and Ronneby. Most fines were handed out in Malmö with 77 followed by Uppsala with 25.
The fine stands at 800 kronor for minor littering such as fast food packaging. Since 2022 cigarette butts, snus and chewing gum have also counted as litter that can result in a fine.
