OpenAI delays ChatGPT adult mode launch further

OpenAI has postponed the rollout of its adult mode for ChatGPT once more, prioritizing other enhancements. A company spokesperson explained the decision stems from focusing on features that benefit more users immediately. The mode, intended for verified adults, now lacks a specific release date.

OpenAI continues to adjust its plans for ChatGPT's adult mode, pushing back the launch to emphasize higher-priority developments. According to a report by Alex Heath of Sources, a company spokesperson stated that the delay allows the team to concentrate on "gains in intelligence, personality improvements, personalization, and making the experience more proactive." The spokesperson added that while the adult mode remains a goal, it "will take more time."

The concept emerged in October when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on X the company's intent to implement more age-gating under its "treat adults like adults" approach. This included provisions for "erotica for verified adults." Altman initially targeted a December release, but an executive updated during a December briefing that it would arrive in the first quarter of 2026.

As the first quarter of 2026 nears its end, no new timeline has been provided. OpenAI did introduce an age prediction tool in January, which could support the eventual adult mode rollout. The delay reflects the company's shifting focus amid ongoing advancements in its AI offerings.

OpenAI has launched GPT-5.5, its latest AI model integrated into ChatGPT, seven weeks after GPT-5.4. The update focuses on coding, computer use, and research, with enhanced agentic capabilities for independent task completion. Paying ChatGPT and Codex users can access it now, with API rollout planned soon.

OpenAI announced an optional Advanced Account Security feature on Thursday for users worried about phishing attacks on their ChatGPT and Codex accounts. The new mode enforces strict access controls to prevent account takeovers. It targets individuals concerned about becoming victims of hackers.

Workers paid to train advanced AI models are increasingly relying on chatbots like ChatGPT to generate the required conversations and tests. This shortcut, described as widespread by multiple sources, risks degrading the quality of future models through recursive training on synthetic data.
