The family of Brazilian basketball legend Oscar Schmidt, who died on April 17 from cardiorespiratory arrest, expressed gratitude for global tributes on social media. Highlights include a homage by Flamengo's Arrascaeta during a match on April 19.
Oscar Schmidt's family shared a heartfelt message on social media in multiple languages, thanking supporters: "For us as a family, each tribute has been received with deep gratitude. All this affection has been essential to help us through this very difficult time." They pledged to honor his legacy, echoing his signature phrase: "a hug and health to all."
The farewell ceremony will be private, limited to family members.
Just days before his passing, on April 8, Schmidt was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Comitê Olímpico do Brasil (COB), with the award accepted by his son Felipe Schmidt.
On April 19, during Flamengo's match against Bahia, midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta wore Schmidt's number 14 jersey, scored in the 16th minute, and celebrated with a basketball shooting gesture in tribute.
