Paramount schedules Sonic spin-off movie for 2028

Paramount Pictures has announced a new live-action Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off film set for release on December 22, 2028. The movie, described as a 'Sonic Universe Event Film,' follows the success of the franchise's previous entries. While details remain unconfirmed, rumors suggest it could center on Shadow the Hedgehog.

Announcement Details

Paramount has added a spin-off to its Sonic the Hedgehog movie lineup, slated for theaters on December 22, 2028. According to Variety, this 'Sonic Universe Event Film' is positioned four years after Sonic the Hedgehog 3's December 2024 debut. The project is expected to diverge from the main storyline featuring Sonic and his friends, potentially exploring other characters in the universe.

Franchise Background

The Sonic films have been a box office hit, with the three movies to date grossing over $1.2 billion worldwide. Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released last December, earned around $500 million and introduced Shadow the Hedgehog as the antagonist, played by Keanu Reeves. In the film's post-credits scene, Shadow recovers his inhibitor rings after a space battle, hinting at his return. The upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is scheduled for March 19, 2027, and will focus on Metal Sonic and Amy Rose, adapting elements from Sonic CD.

Rumors and Speculation

Longstanding rumors point to this spin-off being Shadow-centric, especially given his role in Sonic 3 and the character's popularity. It could introduce Team Dark members like Rouge the Bat and E-123 Omega. However, Paramount has only confirmed it exists within the Sonic universe, leaving specifics unverified. A Knuckles TV series spin-off premiered on Paramount+ in 2024.

This expansion continues the franchise's momentum, with Sonic 4 arriving just over a year and a half before the spin-off.
