Nigeria Police Force has dismissed Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman and other officers for the extrajudicial killing of Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State. Inspector-General Rilwan Olutunji Disu ordered their dismissal and criminal prosecution following an investigation. The Nigerian Bar Association condemned the incident as a violation of the rule of law.

A video that went viral on social media on Tuesday showed ASP Nuhu Usman shooting Mene Ogidi, a suspect seated on the ground with his hands tied behind his back, in Effurun, Delta State. The Delta State Police Command confirmed the incident, arrested Usman, and transferred him along with other involved officers to Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action.

On Wednesday, Inspector-General of Police Rilwan Olutunji Disu announced during a press briefing in Abuja that the Force Disciplinary Committee and Orderly Room Tribunal had investigated the matter. They recommended the dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and other implicated officers for violating Force Order 247 on firearm use, along with criminal prosecution for unlawful homicide. Disu stated, “This action was criminal, it was unprofessional, and it has no place in the Nigeria Police Force.” The recommendations were forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification.

Disu described the incident as “criminal, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable,” emphasizing zero tolerance for lawlessness. He extended condolences to Ogidi’s family, assuring transparent justice, and appealed for calm in Delta State.

NBA President Afam Osigwe condemned the killing, saying no officer has the right to act as “prosecutor, judge, and executioner.” He called for thorough investigation of all involved personnel and directed NBA committees in Warri, Effurun, and Udu to monitor the case.
