Prime Video's upcoming series Elle, a prequel to the 2001 film Legally Blonde, will debut on July 1. The show chronicles the high school experiences that shaped Elle Woods into the character portrayed by Reese Witherspoon in the original movie. According to the official logline, it allows viewers to "learn about the life experiences that shaped [Elle] into the iconic young woman we came to know and love." Notably, the series has been renewed for Season 2 ahead of its first season's premiere.
Witherspoon shared the premiere date and renewal news via Instagram, featuring Lexi Minetree in the title role. Minetree, a newcomer, was cast as young Elle Woods following an extensive search, with Witherspoon announcing the role on February 13, 2025, in an Instagram video.
The cast includes Chandler Kinney as Kimberly, a sharp-tongued senior who dislikes Elle; Jacob Moskovitz as Miles, the school's star athlete charmed by her; and Gabrielle Policano as Liz, described as the anti-Elle Woods. June Diane Raphael portrays Elle's mother Eva, while Tom Everett Scott plays her father Wyatt. James Van Der Beek recurs as Dean Wilson, the school district superintendent and mayoral candidate.
Laura Kittrell, creator of Insecure, and Caroline Dries, from The Vampire Diaries, serve as co-showrunners. Executive producers include Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter, Lauren Kisilevsky, and Marc Platt, with production by Amazon MGM Studios and Hello Sunshine. A trailer has not yet been released.
Set before Elle's college and law school days, the series will not feature younger versions of characters like Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge), Vivian (Selma Blair), or Emmett (Luke Wilson) from Harvard.
This prequel builds on the original film's story of Elle, a sorority girl who excels at Harvard Law School after initially aiming to win back her ex.
