Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin has spoken about the life-threatening heart condition his fiancée Carolina Matovac faced last summer. The ordeal included multiple cardiac arrests and a transplant while she was pregnant.
Dahlin described the events during a vacation in southern France. Matovac began feeling unwell with a fever, prompting a hospital visit to check on their unborn child. Doctors then informed the couple that she had suffered several heart stops.
The couple lost the child. Dahlin said the experience served as a major wake-up call. He noted it helped him approach the NHL season with Buffalo Sabres more calmly.
Buffalo allowed Dahlin to return to Sweden several times during the winter. Matovac joined him in the United States in March after her recovery.
Dahlin also received the Guldpucken award as Sweden's top player and earned a Norris Trophy nomination this season.
