A new SCB analysis shows the probability of short-term work absence rises by 57 percent during men's football championships.

Statistics Sweden has reviewed data from 2005 to 2025 and compared absence during nine championships, four World Cups and five European Championships.

The probability of short absence was 27 percent during summer weeks with championships, compared to 19 percent without.

”The odds of a person being absent from work increase by 57 percent while men's football championships are ongoing”, says statistician Lena Johansson at SCB.

Younger people and foreign-born showed lower absence than older and domestic-born. The figures come from the Labour Force Surveys.
