Democratic Socialist-backed candidates swept several New York primaries last week, with all of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s endorsed contenders prevailing in congressional and state legislative races.
Last Tuesday, Mamdani-backed candidates won three congressional primaries and five state legislative contests. Claire Valdez defeated Antonio Reynoso in NY-7. Darializa Avila Chevalier unseated incumbent Adriano Espaillat, and Brad Lander defeated Dan Goldman.
Mamdani, who took office earlier this year, has campaigned on policies including government-run grocery stores, rent freezes, free buses, and expanded public childcare. His endorsements played a visible role in the victories, appearing on campaign materials.
The results have drawn reactions from across the political spectrum. President Donald Trump described the trend as “the biggest threat to our nation.” Former Senator Joe Manchin called the shift toward socialism “crazy.”
