At The Game Awards 2025, Casey Hudson revealed Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a new single-player action RPG from his studio Arcanaut Studios. The game serves as a spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic, set in the Old Republic era of the Star Wars Expanded Universe. It features player-driven choices influencing light or dark paths, though no release date has been set.
Announcement Details
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was unveiled during The Game Awards on December 12, 2025, with a teaser trailer showcasing a female Force user wielding a lightsaber. Directed by Casey Hudson, who led the original Knights of the Old Republic at BioWare, the game is developed by Arcanaut Studios, founded by Hudson earlier in 2025 after his previous studio closed.
Hudson emphasized the project's roots in his past work: "When we developed the original KOTOR, we wanted to create a definitive Star Wars experience... Fate of the Old Republic represents an opportunity to explore a contemporary vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an all-new story crafted specifically to deliver on the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR."
Gameplay and Setting
Described as a narrative-driven action RPG, Fate of the Old Republic is not a direct sequel to Knights of the Old Republic or its follow-up. Instead, it introduces new characters, locations, and a fresh story set in the Old Republic era, part of the Legends continuity rather than current canon. Players can make choices aligning with light or dark sides, echoing KOTOR's moral decisions, though it shifts from turn-based to action-oriented combat.
The game is in early development, with Arcanaut still recruiting staff. Hudson noted, "We’re still early in development, with many challenges ahead." Sources indicate a release is years away, potentially 2028 or later, given the studio's newness and AAA development timelines.
Platforms and Expectations
It is confirmed for PC and unspecified consoles, but with such an extended timeline, it may target next-generation hardware like PlayStation 6. Fans of the Old Republic series, including the long-running MMO, have expressed excitement over this return to the era, allowing creative freedom outside strict canon constraints.
