Tharaka Nithi governor appointed CoG vice chairperson

Tharaka Nithi Governor Onesmus Muthomi Njuki has been unanimously appointed as the new Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG), replacing Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga. The election took place during a CoG meeting in Naivasha. Kahiga resigned and was removed from the position after making insensitive remarks about the death of Raila Odinga.

The Council of Governors (CoG) has unanimously elected Tharaka Nithi Governor Onesmus Muthomi Njuki as its new Vice Chairperson during a meeting on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, in Naivasha, Nakuru County. Chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi, Wajir Governor, announced the results and stated, “This is an important responsibility that requires cooperation, justice, and dedication. We believe Governor Njuki will continue the foundations of the Council and strengthen our efforts in advancing county governance.”

Njuki, who had served as CoG Chief Whip since October 6, thanked his colleagues for their trust. “My fellow governors, I receive with great humility and immense gratitude the confidence you have shown in me. I promise to uphold the dignity of this office and collaborate with you to advance the Council's agenda,” he said. Previously, he chaired the CoG Health Committee.

The Vice Chairperson position became vacant after Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga resigned on October 22 following the release of a video in which he appeared to celebrate the death of Raila Odinga, stating it would force the government to redirect resources to the Mount Kenya region. Odinga passed away on October 15 while receiving treatment in India, and his state funeral was held on October 19 under President William Ruto.

Kahiga apologized the next day, claiming his words were taken out of context and were personal. Nevertheless, CoG convened an emergency meeting and passed a vote of no confidence against him, stating, “The Council has resolved to remove Governor Mutahi Kahiga, having passed a vote of no confidence against him, and hereby removes him as the Vice Chair of the Council.” The CoG plans to discuss further disciplinary action against him.

Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi has now taken over as Chief Whip. This election comes as CoG addresses key national issues such as devolution, inter-county government cooperation, and development funding.
