Trans Nzoia County Governor George Natembeya suffered a broken leg in an accident on Christmas Day, according to details shared by his CECM for Lands, Housing, Physical Planning and Urban Development, Pius Gumo. Gumo disclosed this during the memorial service for former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo in Bungoma on December 29, 2025. "I have brought the condolence message of Governor George Natembeya. He got involved in an accident during Christmas, and he broke his leg; that is why he could not be here. He would have loved to be here to console the family," Gumo stated.
In the message delivered by Gumo, Natembeya praised Jirongo as a leader who championed the interests of ordinary citizens and urged other leaders to follow suit. Natembeya had been a strong advocate for incorporating traditional rites in Jirongo's burial, such as placing a torch inside the casket, a practice reserved for prominent figures who die under controversial circumstances.
Natembeya's last public appearance was on December 24, when he visited Wamalwa Kijana Hospital in his county. There, he cleared patient bills exceeding Ksh 6 million, primarily for mothers. He also spoke with some patients and noted their pre-hospitalization challenges.
Additionally, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa criticized the government's silence on Jirongo's death, noting the absence of any official representative at the service and calling for a full report on the circumstances surrounding it.
