Uppsala's municipal council has approved a new environmental program that unifies governance of environmental and climate efforts. The program raises ambitions for biological diversity and air quality.
The new program replaces the previous environmental and climate program as well as the water program. It introduces targets to strengthen biological diversity, improve air quality in line with WHO guidelines, reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the municipal group and promote a circular economy.
A new goal area called viable natural environments has been added. Indicators such as the share of favorable land use for biological diversity and nitrogen dioxide levels in the air will be monitored.
Erik Pelling (S), chair of the municipal board, said it is an important step to gather and clarify the municipality's environmental and climate work. Linda Eskilsson (MP), municipal councilor, stressed the need to ramp up efforts on biological diversity.
