C. Joseph Vijay, president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, was sworn in as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on May 10, 2026, ending decades of rule by the DMK and AIADMK.
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam won 108 seats in the recent Assembly elections. With support from the Congress, VCK, CPI, CPI(M) and IUML, the party reached 120 MLAs in the 234-member House.
Vijay took the oath at Nehru Stadium in Chennai at 10 a.m. Nine other ministers, including Aadhav Arjuna, ‘Bussy’ N. Anand and K.A. Sengottaiyan, were also sworn in. The Governor has asked Vijay to seek a confidence vote by May 13.
Of the TVK’s 107 MLAs excluding Vijay, 93 are first-time legislators. The party’s MLAs have an average age of 45, and 41 are under 40. Many come from business, real estate or professional backgrounds.
