Afenifere calls for review of State Police Bill provisions

The Pan-Yoruba group Afenifere has urged the National Assembly to amend the State Police Bill to prevent state forces from becoming appendages of the federal government. The group praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for sending the bill but stressed the need for greater autonomy.

Afenifere issued the statement after a caucus meeting at the Akure residence of its leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti. National Publicity Secretary Jare Ajayi said some clauses in the bill would strengthen federal control rather than liberalise policing.

The group recommended moving policing to the Concurrent Legislative List. It also called on Yoruba-speaking state governors to address insecurity and urged peaceful election campaigns.

Afenifere expressed concern over the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State. It reiterated its call for restructuring to speed national development.
