Arrow Video announces Red Sonja 4K Blu-ray release

Arrow Video has revealed details for a 4K restoration of the 1985 sword-and-sorcery film Red Sonja, starring Brigitte Nielsen. The physical media edition will arrive in the U.S. and Canada on March 24. Fans can look forward to new special features alongside high-definition upgrades.

The 1985 film Red Sonja, a spin-off from the Conan the Barbarian series, follows the titular warrior as she seeks vengeance after her family is slain by the tyrannical Queen Gedren, played by Sandahl Bergman. Chosen by the goddess Scáthach, Sonja gains extraordinary strength and skill to thwart Gedren's plan to use a world-annihilating talisman. The movie delivers high adventure with steel-clashing action and an epic score by Ennio Morricone.

Arrow Video's upcoming 4K Blu-ray features a restoration from the camera negative, including new HDR grading. It offers Dolby Vision/HDR presentation, original lossless mono audio, and optional DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround sound. English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing are included.

New special features highlight the production: audio commentaries by critics Eugenio Ercolani and Troy Howarth, and comic book expert Dave Baxter. Fresh interviews cover actor Ernie Reyes Jr. in 'The Prince and Me,' action unit supervisor Vic Armstrong in 'Swords, Stunts and Sonja,' and stunt performers like Pietro Torrisi and Ottaviano Dell’Acqua. Additional discussions feature assistant production manager Stefano Spadoni, FX artist Domingo Lizcano on Emilio Ruiz del Río's work, and make-up FX assistant Adriano Carboni.

Archival content includes an unreleased interview with poster artist Renato Casaro, a featurette on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s career with filmmakers Peter Hyams and Arthur Allan Seidelman, and an interview with assistant director Michel Ferry on 'Red Sonja vs. Kalidor: The Making of a Misunderstanding.' The release also contains the theatrical trailer, image gallery, reversible sleeve with artwork by Casaro, a booklet with essays by John Walsh, Nanni Cobretti, and Barry Forshaw, a double-sided foldout poster, and six artcards.

This edition arrives after Christmas, with the U.S. and Canada street date set for March 24.
