Beta Film backs drama series on King Ludwig II

Beta Film has joined the production of Ludwig, an upcoming German TV drama about the eccentric King Ludwig II. The series is set to be one of Germany's largest recent productions. Meanwhile, a third season of the Dutch royal series Máxima is in development.

At the London TV Screenings, Beta Film announced its involvement in Ludwig (working title), a drama centered on King Ludwig II of Bavaria. The project, produced by the team behind Dark and 4 Blocks, is slated for broadcasters ARD Degeto, BR, ServusTV, and SRF. Ludwig II ascended to the throne in 1864 and earned nicknames such as the Swan King, the Fairytale King, and the Mad King due to his extravagant projects, including Neuschwanstein Castle, which inspired Disney's iconic castle logo.

The storyline follows psychologist Gustav Zimmermann as he examines a psychiatric report that could declare the king incompetent to rule. This investigation uncovers Ludwig's challenges with power, his desire for freedom, and a forbidden love. Luis Pintsch stars as Ludwig II, with Felix Mayr portraying Zimmermann. The cast also includes Aaron Friesz, Carlotta Bähre, and Jonathan Kriener.

Ferdinand Dohna, Head of Content at Beta Film, described Ludwig as “a romantic dreamer with rock-star allure, who accepted no compromises when the realization of his visions and dreams was at stake.” He noted that the king “failed in the end and died under mysterious circumstances at a young age,” adding that these elements create “larger-than-life characters” brought to life by an outstanding team and cast that will appeal globally.

In related news, Beta Film revealed that season 3 of its distributed Dutch series Máxima is underway. The show chronicles the life of Queen Máxima Zorreguieta and has been called “the Dutch version of The Crown.” It achieved success on Videoland in the Netherlands and strong international sales. A spin-off, The Other Royals, and season 2 are forthcoming.
