Bi Gan to direct sci-fi drama Resurrection

Chinese filmmaker Bi Gan is developing a new sci-fi drama titled Resurrection, with filming set to begin before the end of the year. The project reunites him with key collaborators from his previous works and stars Shu Qi and Jackson Yee. It follows his acclaimed features Kaili Blues and Long Day’s Journey into Night.

Bi Gan, the Chinese writer-director known for his visually striking and narratively complex films, is preparing his fourth feature, a sci-fi drama called Resurrection. Five years after his breakthrough Long Day’s Journey into Night impressed audiences at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival with its innovative hour-long 3D sequence, Bi is currently finalizing the script. Production is slated to start later this year, co-produced by Charles Gillibert’s CG Cinema, the same studio behind his 2018 film.

The story centers on a woman who becomes trapped in an eternal time zone composed of her own dreams during surgery. There, she encounters an android corpse that begins to awaken its senses as she shares stories with it. Starring in the film are Shu Qi, recognized for roles in The Assassin and Millennium Mambo, and Jackson Yee from Better Days. Cinematographer Dong Jingsong, who worked with Bi on past projects, returns as director of photography.

Bi first gained international attention with Kaili Blues in 2015, earning him the Best Emerging Director award at the Locarno Film Festival. The film also secured honors at Taipei’s Golden Horse Awards and the Three Continents Festival in Nantes. His follow-up, Long Day’s Journey into Night, competed in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section and won Best Cinematography, Best Original Film Score, and Best Sound Effects at the Golden Horse Awards. Resurrection could premiere at festivals as early as next year, continuing Bi’s reputation for challenging storytelling and mesmerizing visuals.
