Romildo Batista de Lima, a 69-year-old pastor from Minas Gerais living in Uberlândia, died after being hit by a wall during the tremor in Caracas. He was traveling with his wife Carlha Nacarid to visit her family and was waiting for a return flight to Brazil on Friday.
The couple was rescued and taken to hospital, but Romildo did not survive. Carlha suffered a hip fracture and remains immobilized amid scarce medical resources. The family organized a crowdfunding campaign to repatriate the body and assist with care.
The Brazilian government confirmed two Brazilian citizens among the dead in the quakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 recorded on Wednesday. Itamaraty maintains contact with the family through the ambassador in Caracas without releasing personal details.
