Centre extends CRPF cover to six rebel Shiv Sena MPs

The Centre has granted CRPF security cover to six Shiv Sena MPs who defected to the Eknath Shinde-led camp.

The CRPF cover was assigned on Monday in addition to the Y-plus category security already provided by the Maharashtra Police on June 17. An official said CRPF personnel have taken over as personal security officers for the MPs and will work with state police.

The six MPs are Sanjay Jadhav, Bhausaheb Wakchaure, Sanjay Deshmukh, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar, Omraje Nimbalkar and Sanjay Patil. They joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena on June 22.

Each MP will receive at least two CRPF personnel under the Y-category cover. The move follows a threat assessment by central agencies after recent political developments in Maharashtra.

The Punjab government has withdrawn Z-plus security cover from Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha, while the Centre has directed Delhi Police to provide him Z-category protection. The change came days after AAP removed Chadha as the party's deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, replacing him with Ashok Mittal. AAP leaders have linked it to rumors of Chadha joining the BJP.
