Christian group urges osun parties to pick christian candidates

The Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Osun State has called on political parties to field Christian candidates for the 2026 governorship election, citing long-standing marginalization. The group argues that Christians have been relegated to deputy roles under Muslim governors. This plea comes ahead of party primaries for the August 8, 2026, poll.

On Friday, October 31, 2025, the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), Osun State Chapter, held a press conference at the CAN Secretariat in Owode-Ede. Chairman Ayodele Owoofe addressed the gathering, urging political parties to break from the pattern of excluding Christians from the governorship position.

Owoofe highlighted that since the return of democracy, Osun has been led by Muslim governors—Chief Bisi Akande, Rauf Aregbesola, and Gboyega Oyetola—all paired with Christian deputies. He noted that incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke is perceived as having ties to both faiths. 'Christians in Osun State have remained steadfast and supportive of governance. We have contributed actively to the growth and stability of the state,' Owoofe said. 'It is therefore only fair and just that political parties recognize this by providing Christians the platform to lead.'

The group described the consistent Muslim/Christian ticket as an imbalance that undermines inclusivity. Owoofe emphasized that the call is for equity, not against any religion: 'We are not against any religion, but the era of Christians being confined to the role of deputy governors must end. Christians are not second-class citizens.' He pointed to competent Christian politicians ready to lead and appealed for Christian/Muslim tickets to foster unity.

In related developments, APC aspirant Babajide Omoworare, speaking to journalists in Osogbo on the same day, affirmed his intent to contest the party's December primary without stepping down for fellow aspirant Iyiola Omisore. Meanwhile, former Governor Gboyega Oyetola expressed optimism about APC's chances, while Adeleke voiced confidence in his re-election based on performance.
