Cliffords discuss refined debut album at Mad Cool

Irish band Cliffords spoke about their upcoming debut album during an interview at Mad Cool 2026 in Madrid. The group described the project as refined and inward-looking while reflecting on recent tours.

Cliffords caught up with NME backstage at the festival just before performing in the Mahou Cinco Estrellas tent. Frontwoman Iona Lynch and bandmates discussed a busy summer that included supporting Mumford & Sons at BST Hyde Park and opening for Florence + the Machine.

Keyboardist Locon O’Toole confirmed the band is recording new music after the festival run. He noted that writing took place over four months between Cork and Blackpool, with sessions running daily from 9am to 5pm.

Lynch said the album will continue themes of mental health from the single ‘Marsh’. She added that the record explores contrasts of good and bad experiences in life.

Bassist Gavin Dawkins highlighted refinements to their sound. The group also shared excitement about supporting Wolf Alice in Newcastle after years of comparisons to the band.
