Coco Gauff reaches Wimbledon semifinals for first time

Coco Gauff defeated Jessica Pegula in the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Tuesday to reach the semifinals at the All-England Club for the first time. The 22-year-old American won the match in one hour and 48 minutes.

Gauff, a two-time major champion, joined an exclusive group of active WTA players who have reached the semifinals or better at all four Grand Slam tournaments. She is now alongside Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Karolina Pliskova, Aryna Sabalenka, and Iga Swiatek on that list.

After the victory, Gauff thanked the Centre Court crowd for their support. “I am really enjoying the process of being here playing at Wimbledon, so special in front of you guys, which makes it even more special,” she said. She added that the fans’ presence gave her extra motivation.

The win ended a two-year drought for Gauff on grass courts. She had not secured a victory on the surface in the previous two years before this tournament. Gauff will next face either Naomi Osaka or Karolina Muchova in the semifinal.
