Doctors raise alarm over AI-fueled scam targeting patients

Doctors have warned the public about fraudsters impersonating medical practitioners on social media to sell unverified cancer medicines.

Doctors have warned the public about fraudsters impersonating medical practitioners on social media to sell unverified cancer medicines. The warning follows reports of artificial intelligence-generated content falsely linking prominent cancer specialist Dr. Catherine Nyongesa to treatments she does not provide. Nyongesa, a radiation oncologist, said the videos feature claims that she treats conditions unrelated to her specialty, such as arthritis and erectile dysfunction. Nyongesa said she received a call from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), which expressed concern over the circulating videos. She added that the patients may be exposed to serious health risks if they consume the unregistered products being sold. The warning comes after the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) alerted the public in May about a counterfeit batch of a cancer drug being sold in Kenyan shops.
