E. Lockhart expands 'We Were Liars' universe with new book 'We Fell Apart'

Author E. Lockhart has released her new novel 'We Fell Apart,' set in the same world as her bestselling 'We Were Liars' and its Amazon Prime Video adaptation. The book introduces fresh characters and secrets tied to the Sinclair family while standing alone as a story. Lockhart also shared updates on Season 2 of the TV series, which is in production and will incorporate elements from the sequel 'Family of Liars.'

Book Overview

'We Fell Apart' follows Matilda, who visits her reclusive artist father Kingsley Cello at his seaside estate on Hidden Beach. There, she encounters her half-brother Meer, former child star Brock, and brooding Tatum. The story unfolds as a Gothic beach tale inspired by a crumbling property on Martha’s Vineyard that Lockhart toured, featuring a castle-like home with a neglected swimming pool.

Initially conceived as a standalone, the narrative evolved to connect with the 'We Were Liars' universe. Characters trespass onto Beechwood Island, site of a recent tragedy from the original book, offering fans familiar locations like the tennis courts and tiny beach from a new perspective. Lockhart emphasized, “If people want to learn more Sinclair family secrets, they will find them in ‘We Fell Apart.’ But it is its own story."

The book explores themes of kingdoms and secrets, contrasting the establishment Sinclair world with an alternative ruled by an absent patriarch.

TV Series Update

Season 2 of Amazon’s 'We Were Liars,' starring Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence Sinclair, is in production with showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie. Lockhart serves as a producer. The season will delve into the dark past of Cady’s mother and aunts from 'Family of Liars,' while introducing new twists and a current storyline.

Returning cast includes Caitlin FitzGerald, Candice King, Mamie Gummer, David Morse, and Joseph Zada. Lockhart noted, “Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie have read this book,” hinting at potential influences, though she deferred to the showrunners' vision. She praised their focus on “complex, nuanced, difficult characters.”

The expansion keeps fans engaged until the next season, blending literary and televisual storytelling in the Sinclair saga.
