Egypt completes preparations to host African university games

Egypt has finished logistical arrangements to welcome around 2,000 athletes from 25 countries for the 12th Federation of Africa University Sports Games in Cairo this August.

The Cairo 2026 event is set for August 9 to 16 and will include competitions in 18 sports. Forty-five universities from 16 African nations have confirmed participation so far. Higher Education and Scientific Research Minister Abdelaziz Konsowa said the government has mobilised resources to meet international standards.

FASU President Ashraf Sobhy highlighted Egypt's regional role in supporting university sports across the continent. International University Sports Federation President Leonz Eder noted that successful delivery could open the door for Africa to host the World University Games. The organising committee has selected venues across five zones in Greater Cairo, with Helwan University serving as the main sports village.

A partnership with Hefny Pharmaceutical Group was announced to promote health and sports initiatives. Side programmes will include cultural exchanges, a sustainability competition and efforts to attract African students through the Study in Egypt programme. An operational test was conducted earlier this year during a national tournament.
