Peacock has greenlit a new television series based on the 2009 film Bride Wars, directed by Gary Winick and starring Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway. According to reports, Emma Roberts will lead the cast as a big-city wedding planner who relocates to a small town in North Carolina, sparking a rivalry with a local planner over the same high-profile wedding. The official logline describes the plot: “As the two women battle to plan the same wedding, their rivalry quickly escalates into a larger clash over friendship, community, and, ultimately, love.”
The project, produced by New Regency, 20th Television, and UCP, is penned by Sasha Rothchild, who will also executive produce alongside Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, and Natalie Lehmann for New Regency; Roberts, Karah Preiss, and Matt Matruski for Belletrist; and Alexandra Milchan and Martin Salgo for Crescent Line. Additional cast members include Kristen Johnston, Bryan Greenberg, and Candice Bergen.
The original Bride Wars followed two childhood best friends who become enemies after their weddings are scheduled for the same date and venue at New York's Plaza Hotel. Written by Greg DePaul, Casey Wilson, and June Diane Raphael, the movie earned over $115 million worldwide on a $30 million budget.
Roberts, known for her roles in Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story—where she is slated to return for the 13th season—and Scream Queens as Chanel Oberlin, began her career on Nickelodeon's Unfabulous from 2004 to 2007. Her film credits include Madame Web, Holidate, We're the Millers, and Scream 4. Further details on the series are expected in the coming months.
