Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua said his 'snake' remarks used figurative language and were not meant literally. He spoke on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, after the NCIC announced investigations into him and other leaders.
Gachagua said he used metaphors, personification and hyperbole to convey his message. He insisted the intent was to remove President William Ruto and his supporters through the ballot.
He stated he is ready to provide further explanation to the NCIC if he receives a formal letter. He noted that figurative language is common in politics.
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei submitted a complaint on July 27, 2026, claiming Gachagua's statements linked the Kalenjin community to criminality and organised violence. The NCIC confirmed the investigations in a joint statement with the Interreligious Council of Kenya.
Other leaders named include Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and several other government officials and MPs.
