Google launches Me Meme feature in Photos app

Google has begun rolling out an experimental feature called Me Meme in its Photos app, allowing users to create personalized memes using their photos. Powered by Google Gemini, the tool recreates meme templates with user images but is initially limited to Android users in the US. It will expand to iOS devices in the coming weeks.

Google's Photos app now includes a new experimental tool named Me Meme, which leverages the company's Gemini AI to transform user photos into memes. The feature takes standard meme templates and inserts a selected image, such as a selfie, into them. However, Google notes that the resulting images might not always perfectly align with the original photo due to the AI's processing.

Availability is restricted at launch: it's only for English-speaking users in the United States and currently accessible on Android devices. Those without access yet may need to wait as the rollout continues gradually. Google has indicated to TechCrunch that iOS support will arrive over the next few weeks.

To use Me Meme, users open the Photos app and navigate to the Create tab at the bottom of the screen, where the option should appear. First-time users will see guided instructions, while return visits jump directly into the meme-making process. Options include selecting from Google's preset templates or uploading a custom image or meme as a base. Next, users pick a photo—ideally one with a clear view of their face—and tap Generate to produce the meme. Satisfied results can be saved or shared to social media, with a Regenerate button available for variations.

The feature was first spotted by Android Authority in October 2025, ahead of this limited release announced in January 2026. This addition aims to make photo editing more fun and creative within the app, though its experimental status means broader availability and refinements are expected.
