Homa Bay deputy governor alleges impeachment plot by governor

Homa Bay Deputy Governor Joseph Magwanga has accused Governor Gladys Wanga of plotting his impeachment amid escalating tensions in county leadership. The fallout intensified after recent by-elections where Magwanga backed a rival candidate. He vows to counter with his own motion if hers fails.

The rift between Homa Bay's top officials has deepened following the Kasipul by-elections, where Deputy Governor Joseph Magwanga supported Independent candidate Philip Aroko over the Orange Democratic Movement's Boyd Were. In an interview with NTV on December 5, 2025, Magwanga revealed that Governor Gladys Wanga has sponsored an impeachment motion at the county assembly to remove him from office.

"They want to impeach me, and I am calling upon them to bring it, and we shall see how it will actually end," Magwanga stated. He added that a failed attempt would prompt him to launch a counter-impeachment against Wanga. "Should it fail, I will also initiate mine, because she knows me and I know her," he said.

Magwanga traced the tensions back to the devolution conference in Homa Bay in August 2025, where he felt disrespected. "You can remember when we were having DevCon, the Governor failed to recognize me but recognized her husband and the Majority Leader; that means that I have no role in the County Government," he claimed.

Post by-elections, Wanga reshuffled the cabinet, stripping Magwanga of his role as County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture. On December 1, 2025, he was denied access to his office, which was locked and guarded by individuals he described as goons.

Luo elders in the county have criticized Wanga's actions against her deputy, adding pressure to the leadership dispute.
