Iltija Mufti mulls legal action against Meta for account withholding

PDP leader Iltija Mufti said on Tuesday she is considering legal recourse against Meta after her X and Facebook accounts were withheld without prior notice.

Ms Mufti, daughter of former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, stated that she had not received any explanation for the suspension of her accounts, which had around 50,000 followers. She linked the action to her criticism of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s remarks on a liquor ban, noting it occurred hours after a related press conference.

She described a broader pattern of silencing voices in Kashmir and said the move affected her ability to highlight issues of public importance. Ms Mufti added that social media serves as a key democratic tool for raising awareness.

In April, Ms Mufti had posted a video of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, which drew police attention but did not result in any FIR naming her. Police cited concerns over content promoting separatist ideology.
