Left Party removes three candidates after Hamas celebrations

Sweden's Left Party has removed three more candidates from its ballot lists in Helsingborg after Expressen revealed they celebrated or praised Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.

The three candidates are Tamam Hashan, Nidal Hejjo and Soha Elhams. Hashan attended a celebration organized by the Palestinian Women's Association. Hejjo posted supportive messages on social media on October 7, 2023. Elhams had earlier shared an image of a person she described as her cousin and a Hamas fighter.

District chair Jesper Sahlén confirmed the candidates were removed. He said support for terrorism is incompatible with the party's values. The party has already removed nine other candidates in several municipalities during the review.

Sahlén denied reports of an agreement with the Palestinian Women's Association or the PLO that would have placed the individuals on the lists. Helsingborg party chair Tomas Gustafsson stressed that antisemitism has no place in the party.
