Madonna discusses Universal Pictures biopic budget dispute

Madonna has spoken about the cancellation of her planned biopic at Universal Pictures, attributing the decision to disagreements over the project's budget.

In an interview with Interview magazine, Madonna said she spent two years developing the script and working on budgeting and casting at Universal Studios.

"We had a falling out, me and Universal, regarding budget because I needed — I’ve had an extraordinary life. I’ve had a huge life, so I needed a big budget," she said. Madonna was attached to co-write and direct the film, with Julia Garner set to star.

She noted that she proposed filming in Serbia to reduce costs but Universal did not support the plan. The project was later shelved, after which Netflix approached her about a limited bioseries.
