The New York Islanders announced the signing of defenseman Malte Gustafsson to a three-year entry-level deal. The 6-foot-4 player was the club's first-round pick at 13th overall in this summer's Draft.
Gustafsson broke through with HV71 during the past season, appearing in 27 SHL games where he recorded three assists. He also played 19 games in J20 Nationell and tallied 12 points.
Earlier this year, Gustafsson helped Sweden win gold at the U18 World Championship. He contributed five points in six tournament games.
Islanders officials have highlighted his size, skating ability and defensive skills. His existing contract with HV71 leaves open the possibility of another season in Sweden before a potential move to North America.
