The Mendoza family has established Modala Beach Resort at the serene tip of Doljo Beach in Panglao, Bohol, focusing on warmth and Filipino hospitality. Drawing from their own travel experiences, they created a space for relaxation away from crowds. Linked to a unique strip mall, it provides convenience without losing tranquility.
At the quieter end of Panglao, Bohol, Modala Beach Resort stands as a Mendoza family project dating back to ideas from around 2012. Elyssa Mendoza, who assists with marketing, shared that their grandfather always dreamed of a beachside spot for family gatherings. 'My mom used to say that her dad always wanted a resort or a home by the beach as a place for everybody to relax and get together. So, my parents decided to make just that,' she told Rappler.
The resort prioritizes quality rooms and food, blending modern design with Filipino elements like bahay na bato influences. It draws inspiration from family trips, such as to South Africa, adapted to local contexts. For instance, they offer ube champorado and ube sinigang at breakfast and on the menu.
Adjacent is the Moadto Strip Mall, Panglao's first such development with eateries like Bohol Bee Farm and Imperial Dragon. The mall's layout was inspired by Jurassic World, according to Mendoza. The on-site Mangaon Ta restaurant, meaning 'let's eat' in Bisaya, serves dishes including creamy sisig tartare, lechon baka, and tuna kinilaw.
As a family-run operation, it avoids corporate constraints, allowing quick adaptations to guest feedback. 'We are free to make decisions that come from the heart,' Mendoza noted. Staff are trained to provide caring service naturally, reflecting authentic hospitality.
Looking ahead, they are expanding under Tumoy Hotels and Resorts, including sub-brands like Ma’oni Seascape Villas and Mo’ayon Resort and Spa, all within Tumoy Leisure Village. The names are in Bisaya: Modala (to bring), Moadto (to go). Their goal remains showcasing Filipino warmth globally.
