Egyptian Minister Manal Awad reviewed progress on an integrated waste treatment centre under construction in 10th of Ramadan City. She urged faster work and a clear timetable for infrastructure completion before handover to the government. The project forms part of a World Bank-backed effort to manage waste across Greater Cairo.
During a meeting with officials from the Waste Management Regulatory Authority and World Bank representatives, Awad examined construction progress, technical preparations and project timelines. The review followed her recent site inspection, where she pressed contractors to speed up work.
The centre will treat municipal, hazardous and medical waste. It will also feature sanitary landfills and a site for construction and demolition waste. These facilities are planned for operation through public-private partnerships.
Awad instructed teams to prepare a detailed timetable for infrastructure tasks and to expedite tender documents. She ordered weekly coordination meetings to address obstacles. The minister called the project one of Egypt’s flagship waste management initiatives.
The facility spans about 1,228 feddans allocated to Cairo Governorate, Qalyubeya Governorate and the New Urban Communities Authority. It is developed under the Greater Cairo Air Pollution and Climate Change Management Project with World Bank financing. World Bank representative Hisham Othman praised the ministry’s efforts and committed to supplying a construction timetable ahead of investment tenders.
