Modalidad 40 registrations drop 1.85% in Nuevo León

At the end of October, Nuevo León had 34,242 people registered under IMSS's Modalidad 40, a 1.85% drop from the previous year. The decline is linked to rising costs for this retirement option. Despite the decrease, the state ranks second nationally.

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) reported that in Nuevo León, at the end of October, there were 34,242 people enrolled in Modalidad 40, marking 644 fewer than in the same month of 2024, or a 1.85% reduction. Compared to September, the number fell from 34,336 to 34,242, a 0.27% drop or 94 fewer registrations.

Over the first ten months of the year, the downward trend resulted in a net loss of 138 people, or 0.48%, starting from 34,380 in December 2024. An expert attributes the decline to the annual cost increases and retirements that occurred during the period. “Without a doubt, the fact that the payment for this retirement option is increasing every year is a factor that, given the current economic situation, makes people think twice before enrolling in this modality,” the specialist noted.

The cost is calculated on the daily capped salary of 25 Units of Measure and Update (UMA), which this year amounts to 2,828.5 pesos. Thus, the monthly payment to IMSS reaches 11,325.59 pesos for 30-day months and 11,703.11 pesos for 31-day months. Last year, with a daily rate of 2,714.25 pesos, the amounts were 9,979.75 and 10,312.41 pesos, respectively, reflecting a 13.48% rise. This increase stems from the yearly UMA adjustment and the rising percentage of salary contributed, which will climb to 18.8% by 2030 from the current 13.347%.

Despite the contraction, Nuevo León holds the second-highest national tally, trailing only Mexico City with 44,245 registrations. October's figure ranks as the fourteenth highest since IMSS began tracking these numbers, with the peak in November 2023 at 36,634 people.
